That Old Feeling . . .

Image
It has been about 23 years since I lost my belief in the Christian God, the God which I had believed in for 25 years.  Since I left Christianity 23 years ago I have not once, not a single time, not even a hint of a twinge, felt any . . . loss regret despair guilt fear uncertainty confusion . . . over my departure from Christianity.  My confidence in the discoveries that I made way back then, and the conclusions that I came to as a result of those discoveries has been entirely unwavering.  In simple terms, I have NO DOUBTS that I made the right decision to leave Christianity 23 years ago . . . . . . often times, as I pass by my bookshelf and glance at my old, well-used Scofield Reference KJV bible, that I have had since the very early 1980's, with so many notes in the margins - often times, when I glance at it I feel a twinge of comfort . . .? . . . the very same twinge that I would often feel those many years ago when I believed that this collection of "Holy" wri...

Ron DeSantis is on the rampage.  He is just another example of how dangerous power is in the hands of the ultra conservative.  Absolutely, the only thing that can stop him is the vote, but assuredly, he will try to find a way around that. Come on Florida, you know that banning books in public schools will not satisfy his desire for total dominance.  Eventually he and his followers will take the next logical steps - the jailing of teachers and book-burnings at dusk. in the school parking lot. If DeSantis becomes President, Gawd help us all. bob r.u.reasonable@gmail.com

The things that Christians say - episode 3

Chad, at  Truth Bomb Apologetics Blog   has a recent post, which is a re-post from a Stand To Reason website article by Greg Koukl.  Chad links to the article so if interested, visit the  Truth Bomb post . Below are the pertinent parts: Sunday, January 22, 202 In a debate on the existence of God, well-known skeptic Michael Shermer attempted to discredit the biblical account of the flood . . . A link of the debate sure would be helpful here.  If there is anything that I have learned over the years it is to be distrustful of Christians claims concerning the motives of skeptics, and claims of what a skeptic has said. . . . by citing a similar Sumerian account written much earlier than Moses’ record. Many other cultures have flood stories in their mythologies, Shermer pointed out. Therefore, he reasoned, all are myths. Again, a link would be helpful.  But yes, many cultures do have flood stories, and the scholarly consensus seems to be that t...

Is there any hope?

Image
Beaten by the police I submit that there is no hope .  There is no evidence of any hope coming in the future.  This horrific problem just continues to rear it's extremely ugly head in an almost predictable fashion.   Seriously - mark your calendar right after some police officer or a group of officers demonstrate their inability to exercise good judgment and like clockwork, exert unreasonable force, to the point of injuring or killing someone.   Then , in a day, a few days, perhaps a week, ask yourself if it has happened again.  Just because you haven't seen a news report on TV doesn't mean it hasn't happened again - try googling and see if there has been one, or several more instances across the country that escaped your notice, or the notice of the media.   I honestly cannot understand how we as a country have not corrected this problem by now. Here in the USA we have known about it for hundreds of years, literally. The problem of c...

A Terribly Frighting Book . . .

Image
Many years ago I was a young Fundamentalist Baptist Young-Earth Creationist Christian, in my early 20's.  I enjoyed collecting Christian books that (obviously) supported my religious beliefs.  But stepping back a few years earlier (50 years ago) for just a moment - when I was in my early teens, before I was a Christian, I remember going on a school field trip with my science class to look for fossils along the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, at the Calvert Cliffs State Park.  The fossil shell impression below is one that I found that day: I carried my discovery to my science teacher and he told me that it was a scallop or clam fossil that was about 12,000,000 years old.  I was thrilled. The transformation from science loving student to science denying young adult began when I was 17.  I am not exactly sure what the motivation was.  I was regularly attending a teen youth group at a local non denominational church - under no pressure from my parents, who w...

The things that Christians say, again . . .

Image
Eric Hernandez , of Eric Hernandez Ministries , has a YouTube channel, like most everyone else on the planet, but I don't fault him for that because I like (hate) YouTube.  I somehow manage to waste an inordinate amount of time there, and often I waste time listening to the thoughtless and erroneous things that Christians say. This morning, while washing a sink full of last nights dishes I decided to listen to Rev. Eric's most recent video:  Answering Popular Atheist Objections . Around the 9:45 mark in the video Eric makes a horrible mistake (proof that all the Christian education in the world can help only so much).  It is a very common mistake that I hear Christian apologists routinely make when they try to come up with a reason why there are such a thing as atheists, or why atheists give the reasons that they give for not believing in bible god  - he says: " Why do I think atheists have bad objections to Christianity or God - I think it's a numbe...

Amen

We have heard talk enough. We have listened to all the drowsy, idealess, vapid sermons that we wish to hear. We have read your Bible and the works of your best minds. We have heard your prayers, your solemn groans and your reverential amens. All these amount to less than nothing. We want one fact. We beg at the doors of your churches for just one little fact. We pass our hats along your pews and under your pulpits and implore you for just one fact. We know all about your moldy wonders and your stale miracles. We want a this-year's-fact. We ask only one. Give us one fact for charity. Your miracles are too ancient. The witnesses have been dead for nearly two thousand years. Robert G. Ingersoll The Gods and Other Lectures (1892) ~  ~  ~ Ya know, I get so damn weary of Christians, when asked ( or when not asked ) to present some evidence ( I usually ask for their best single favorite bit of evidence and I am always let down ) for the existence of their god, they usually (...
